Tale of Woe

My real life continues to suck out loud

so anyway, the suck factor in my daily life has been turned up to eleven over the past several weeks, not that the past decade has been that stellar. Several months ago, I wondered "Should I live-blog my divorce?" Sadly, things have taken a turn for the (much) worse since then.

Since my mother-in-law passed away suddenly back in March '11, TheMissus™ has been more paranoid than usual about heart disease. Our new doctor recommended that TheMissus and I both get a Coronary Calcium Scan. We did so. On a scale of 0 to 400 (the lower the better), I came in at a score of 1. TheMissus™ got a perfect score of 0, but in the analysis, they saw a spot on her lung.

My wife has never been a smoker but you know where this is going.

The spot on the lung led to a CAT scan to confirm it was there, which led to a PET scan to confirm what it was, which led to surgery to remove it. The initial biopsy read adneocarcinoma, so they removed the lower lobe of her lung. The detailed pathology showed lymphatic involvement.

Which means Stage 3A Cancer. Which means a five-year survival rate of 20%.

The Genetial Twinlets are 12, TheBoy is 7. Yes, there are some maths required.

To top it off, the surgical epidural didn't "take", so TheMissus™ came out from under general anesthesia with nothing on board for pain control after having half of a lung removed.

We went from a routine screening exam on 08DEC11 to a lobectomy on 04JAN12.

so anyway, I've been dealing with a few issues in real life and have been somewhat unplugged from the daily political grind. So, let me get this straight: we have (supposedly) major national presidential campaigns missing the filing deadlines for primary elections?

I'm willing to let the other missteps slide; everyone gets a case of the bumbles under the bright lights. People flub up on things they should have known cold; things get said that, taken out of context, sound really bad.

But missing filing deadlines?

Really?

Really?

The upcoming election is Really.Fucking.Important. Surely I'm not the only one who understands that fact.

I've been thinking the same thing, with a twist.....

so anyway, Bill "Daily Pundit" Quick some thoughts on the true, underlying nature of the #OccupyWhatever crowd:

The Marxist organizers are less concerned with what happens to the encampments over the next few weeks than they are with establishing the ability to roll out sizeable numbers of useful tools into the streets as a strategic countermeasure to the much larger Tea Parties, which will begin to make their presence public again as the election draws closer.

They foresee bands of black-masked Occupiers attacking and scattering any legally organized demonstrations the Tea Party may arrange for. The cops can’t do it, but these new Obama Brown Shirts can, while the cops look the other way.

He has a point, I hadn't thought of the "disrupt the TEA Party's rally" angle. Since this whole #OccupyWhatever situation started, I've viewed it as a dress rehearsal for the Zombie Apocalypse to disrupt the 2012 Elections.

so anyway, Smitty of The Other McCain fame posts a thought experiment today:

Of course, he's talking about Sarah Palin and some of the "tea leaves" that have been recently floated. Apparently, Sarah has updated her FaceSpace info page; changing her "Political Views" from "Republican" to "Conservative".

M. Joseph Sheppard opines:

"I suppose one could draw a multitude of conclusions regarding this status change....You can be certain that any move Sarah Palin makes has been well thought out and is with purpose. Could she possibly be sending a message to the RNC that they need to strengthen the conservative planks of the Republican party?"

Josh Painter, at Texans for Sarah Palin has a good post up on the current situation with the GOP candidates and the aforementioned "disturbance in the Force". It's a good "inside baseball" piece, read the whole thing.

Not to go all "Columbo", but there's just one last thing that keeps making squeaking noises in the back of my head. Paraphrasing Josh Painter:

"When Gov. Palin announced on October 5 that she had decided not to run for president, she cited family reasons.....The words "at this time" from her official statement have been cited by some of her supporters as a clue that Sarah Palin, her family and her close advisors saw some new wrinkle in the political landscape that may have caused her to postpone her run, perhaps until 2016 or 2020."

Maybe I'm misremembering _{(it has happened before)} Gov.Palin's announcement, but what I heard her say was that she was "not seeking the Republican nomination.....at this time".

I could be wishcasting, but "not seeking the Republican nomination" does not mean "not running for President". YMMV.

so anyway, via DrewM's post over at Ace of Spades HQ, we learn that Herman Cain has won the straw poll at the Florida CPAC convention. As of 9:30 PM Eastern, memeorandum is all lit up with the news.

Via memeorandum; Byron York's initial reaction:

"....A lot of delegates came to Orlando planning to vote for Rick Perry. But Perry's poor performance at Thursday night's Fox News-Google debate gave them pause and re-opened the question of whom they will support. And many of the conservatives who were attracted to Perry will, when asked for a second choice, naturally gravitate to Cain, who, it just happens, had a particularly good debate on Thursday. So with Perry not commanding the loyalty he did just 48 hours ago, Cain appears to be picking up support...."

There's been some chatter about how Romney activists did a small-scale Operation Chaos and voted for Cain to deny Perry the win (which speaks well of Mitt's organization and chances ). OK, that may have happened, but the numbers don't add up: why would the Romney people vote for Cain so that Mitt would end up third? The results, again via Ace:

so anyway, The stuttering clusterfuck of miserable failure gave his so-called "jobs" speech this evening. I caught bits and pieces of the yammering on the radio on my way home. Yawn. It's the same speech he's been giving for three+ years. You'd think he could deliver it without a tele-prompter by now.

Finally settled down for the evening and had a chance to surf the inter-tube web-net thingies, and lo and behold, Jeff G. of ProteinWisdom fame comes up with the two on, two outs, bases clearing triple that puts the Rockies up by one:

Fortunately, I have a solution to the Post Office's woes: Herman Cain.

Seriously, who would better to right the ship at the USPS than Herman Cain? The man knows how to put things right; and would provide the kind of leadership that the USPS has been lacking since dirt was new.

(I'm not being entirely snarky here. I like and respect Cain, and I think he'd make an excellent President. Alas, the facts on the ground are that his candidacy is not generating the traction it needs and others are sucking all of the oxygen out of the room. I'd love to see him as President, but the writing is on the wall.)

So, here's my plea to the 45th President: first thing in the morning on Wednesday 23 January 2013, nominate Herman Cain as Postmaster General. Give him the mandate to fix things at the Post Office, and an eighteen month deadline. Then sit back and watch the man work.

We'll be back to having mail delivered twice a day and 10¢ First Class postage in no time.

so anyway, I have begun my (admittedly low key) activism, as I mentioned on Monday night.

There's a long, drawn out story behind tonight's activities, but it will have to wait. I'll give you the Joe Friday version ("just the facts")

I tagged pump #2 at the Sam's Club in Ypsilanti, Michigan this evening. I opted for the peel-n-stick label with "This gas price brought to you by Barack Obama" because the color printer at the office was FUBAR, so I couldn't use P.Henry Saddleburr's excellent graphic. Hell, I fill up every third day, so I'll have plenty of opportunities to spread the wealth around.

so anyway, last Tuesday TheMissus™ announced that she and the kids were going 'vegan'. This announcement proceeded a 34 hour filibuster on the joys and benefits of vegan-ism, the evils and horrors of meat consumption, and the pronouncement that I should be a vegan, too. (Three words: Not Gonna Happen)

As expected, it was decreed that all "animal products" be removed from the ice box. I was able to convince her that we should not just throw the food away, but that I would finish off all the "evil animal products".

Bright and early the next morning, I microwaved a plate of turkey bacon* for my breakfast as the kids were eating their free-trade organic oatmeal topped with free-range honey. I had (turkey) bacon for my breakfast everyday for the rest of the week.

So Monday evening, TheMissus™ makes a big batch of organic millet with free-trade mung beans, spinach, and hormone free yeast flakes. The kids were less than impressed. Frustrated, TheMissus™ asked if they wanted to put ketchup or something on it to make it more palatable.

Twin the Youngest piped up "Oh, yes. Can I put something on it?"

"Of course" said TheMissus. "What do you want to put on it?"

"Bacon" said Twin the Eldest.

Somehow, I thought it was a lot funnier than TheMissus™ did.

so anyway, here's the sitch: I've been involved in a running debate with the progressive wing of the family over the cost of health insurance. I'm told, over and over, that ObamaCare is a big f'n deal and I should be grateful that the Democrats are looking out for my best interest. Overlay this with the fact that our COBRA coverage is about to expire and we've been shopping for health insurance for the past several months. It's a topic of keen interest around Casa de Miguel.

The ObamaCare "pre-existing condition" provision and requiring insurers to cover "children" up to the age of 26 (that recently went into effect) were touted it as a victory for working people, courtesy of President Obama and the all-compassionate Democrats. I was branded a fool for my stubborn insistence that ObamaCare was anything less than a good thing.

We finally decided on a policy, and TheMissus™ was shocked when the final price was 23% more than this initial quote. "It all those greedy insurance companies. They want Obama to fail, so they're raising the prices to screw the working class" TheMissus™ exclaimed. (Yes, her "logic" escaped me, too. Actually, she went on for several days on the topic. Decorum prevents me from quoting her verbatim.) When I could get a word in edge-wise, I responded with a mashed-up paraphrase of Hanlon's Razor and BlackFive's Uncle Jimbo:

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by employing the antiquated, dead white male concept of doing the fucking math"

When she finally paused to catch her breath, I said "No, it's just simple economics. Gather 'round, children and I'll put you some knowledge." So the whole family plopped down on the couch to listen and I began:

~~"It was a dark and stormy night....."~~ sorry, wrong story (ed)

"Suppose you're the owner of a restaurant, and it's a 'all-you-can-eat' buffet. You charge $10 per growd-up and they can eat all they want and their kids under 12 years old eat for free. Got it?"

There were general nods of understanding from the kids. TheMissus™ rolled her eyes.

"Now say the Government comes in and tells you that now you have to let kids under 18 years old eat for free."

At this point, TheMissus™, being both progressive and oh so "open-minded", stormed out of the room in a huff. Out of the room, but not out of ear-shot.

Twin the Youngest paused for a moment then said "Teenagers eat a lot more than little kids"

"Yes, usually that's true" I replied. "Not always, but usually a teenager will eat more than a 10 year old."

"A lot more" said Twin the Eldest.

"Here is the question" I said. "Now that you have to let teenagers eat for free, how much do you charge each customer for the 'all-you-can-eat' buffet?"

Twin the Youngest piped up: "You said that teenagers eat for free, so you wouldn't charge them anything."

"Good point" I said. "What would you charge the parents, the growd-ups?"

TheBoy™ leapt to his feet and said "A hundred dollars!" [My heart swelled with pride and I had to wipe away a tear. That's my boy!] "Well, buddy, a hundred dollars is a lot to pay for a meal, even if it is all you can eat" I said. "Good thinking, though."

"I'd still charge $10, but they could only have one plate of food" said Twin the Eldest.

I replied "Nope, you can't do that. You have an 'all-you-can-eat' restaurant and the Government says that you can not change anything about your business, except now you have to let teenagers eat for free."

After a long pause, Twin the Youngest said "But that's not fair". As soon as she said it, she knew what I would say.

"Fair is a weather forecast. How much would you charge?"

Twin the Eldest said $20, Twin the Youngest said $15. TheBoy™ said $30.

"OK" I said. "Why would you charge more?"

Both girls started saying the same thing at the same time. They're twins. It happens.

"Because teenagers eat a lot more than little kids and it will use up more of the food so you would have to charge more."

"Right," I said "your costs would go up because you have to provide more food." Around this time the snickering and snide commentary coming from the other room had all but stopped. TheMissus™ had become uncharacteristically silent.

We talked about it for a few more minutes and I was pleased with their grasp of the subject. The girls are eleven, TheBoy™ is six. All three of them seemed to have an intuitive understanding of Econ 101, and before the conversation was over they were offering up solutions to the question, such as "selling cheaper food" (the concept of reduction of quality), and "only letting people eat there once a week" (rationing).

It really is that simple, I'm surprised that more adults cannot (or will not) recognize the basic concepts of economics.

Ace is spot on in his post on the subject (RTWT):

".....The Obama and the leftist media will attempt to spin this as merely descriptive, and as a tribute to America's resiliency. After all -- we did survive 9/11, didn't we?.....But the left is pushing this idea that we can safely "absorb" many new 9/11's with an eye towards getting us to "accept" the greater bargain they fatuously offer -- peace, and a general wind-down of post-9/11 security "overreactions"....."

I had a different thought when I first read the President's quote: the Obama administration knows, with some degree of certainty, that there will soon be another terrorist attack on American soil. They're just greasing the skids, pre-spinning the eventuality.

This is tangential to another topic that I've been mulling over for the past six weeks or so: When does the Obama administration declare martial law? Before the mid-terms, right after the mid-terms, or right before the new Congress is seated in January 2011?

The mid-terms are approaching, and everyday it looks more and more like the Democrats are going to suffer losses of Biblical proportions. Practically nothing can stop the conservative juggernaut, barring some ginormous event that changes the game; something that could be used as the reasoning for imposing martial law and suspending the elections (or not seating the new Congress).

My original thinking was that there would be a "border incident" with Mexico (I know, there are horrific border incidents every freakin' day, but I mean a really big, egregious incident) but that would be a political loser for the Obama administration, as they are on the wrong side of the border security issue.

Crazy talk? Think about it. Think about how the health care "reform" became law. Is there anything that you would put past this administration?

Remember, this is an administration who's governing philosophy was summed up by President Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emanual: “You don’t ever want a crisis to go to waste; it’s an opportunity to do important things that you would otherwise avoid.”

so anyway, all the cool kids have been talking up the Ground Zero Victory Mosque situation. Two snippets caught my eye this evening on the subject:

so anyway, via John Lott's Website, I discovered the real reason that S.Weasel is raising chickens:

"British shoppers are to be banned from buying eggs by the dozen under new regulations approved by the European Parliament.
For the first time, eggs and other products such as oranges and bread rolls will be sold by weight instead of by the number contained in a packet....
...The new rules will mean that instead of packaging telling shoppers a box contains six eggs, it will show the weight in grams of the eggs inside, for example 372g."

Weasel is sticking it to TheMan: If she can't but them by the dozen, screw those euro-weenies! She'll raise her own! Either that, or she's avoiding the metric system.

The Daily Mail piece goes on to recount the history of how and why eggs are sold by the dozen in the first place (it's less "strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government" than I had hoped) and points out that the "eggs by the ~~pound~~ kilo" kerfuffle "could be the first test of David Cameron’s pre-Election promise to stand up for Britain’s interests in the EU."

This is not the first time Britain has rebelled against Brussels:

"In 2003, a threatened European ban on smoky-bacon crisps was averted at the last minute...after a backlash from the British public."

Therein is the problem with the European Union. Any government that would seek to ban smoky-bacon crisps must be resisted.

looks like the left has a new catch phrase...

so anyway, it's been less than 48 hours since the left side of the pundit-sphere started this whole "epistemic closure" meme and I'm already sick of it. Noel over at Cold Fury sums it up:

"Obama has a version of this shopworn liberal favorite, as well. He’s quite fond of decreeing that ‘the tired, old arguments of yesterday are over’–oh, and by the way, they were all resolved in his favor. How convenient!
It is a pre-emptive dismissal; “Sit down and shut-up, conservatives; your opinions are old, unnecessary and illegitimate.” Or, condensed: “I won.” Which is a funny kind of “open-mindedness” when–and if–you think about it." (emphasis mine)

Expect to hear this phrase repeated ad nauseum for the next week, or until some lefty pundit thumbs through a thesaurus to find the next "new" word or phrase and puts out the talking points memo.

I have a challenge for Stephen "VodkaPundit" Green and PJTV's Hair of the Dog team: count the number of times the phrase "epistemic closure" is used during the Sunday talking head shows. Anyone want to start an over / under pool on how many times the phrase is used?

The Ann Arbor Tea Party

I'm a few days late...

so anyway, last Thursday I made it to the Ann Arbor Tax Day Tea Party, in the heart of the Peoples Republic of Ann Arbor (aka "Moscow on the Huron"). It was very interesting, if a bit low-keyed. There were about 500 people in attendance, and even the anti-TP protesters were polite.

AnnArbor.com (what passes for a newspaper in the Peoples Republic of Ann Arbor) actually was very even-handed in their reporting of the event. I will pick nits over this snippet from their article:

But while this year's Tea Party saw much greater attendance than last year's - 500 people versus 150 last year - a lot of its growth had to do with the counter-protesters that decided to join the party.

AnnArbor.com would lead you to believe that the turnout was dramatically influenced by the anti-Tea Party protesters' turn out. Based on my personal observation, the Tea Partiers outnumbered the counter-protesters by nine or ten to one.

As my luck would have it, none of the pictures I took are worth posting (it was the camera, not the content). Fortunately, the AnnArbor.com article has a slide show.

BAG Day

so anyway, today is officially BAG Day; where all right-minded citizens are encouraged to go out and Buy A Gun.

The coffers here at Casa de Miguel are a bit strained as I've been unemployed for over eleven months now (Thanks, Barack!), so a new gun was not possible. Instead, I bought the next best thing:

It's sad, the ammo shelves at the local Wal-Mart were mostly empty. (Which is partially my fault, as I went on a "stocking up" rampage in the 4th quarter of 2008, for some bitter / clingy reason.) Other than a box on .32 ACP and a couple boxes of .40, the shelves were bare and dusty. They were even out of .22 LR!!!

I haven't the time to make it to the range today to pop some caps, but if all goes according to plan, I'll be attending the Tax Day Tea Party in The Peoples Republic of Ann Arbor (aka "Moscow on the Huron"). It's being held smack dab in downtown Hippyville, on the Diag on the University of Michigan campus, so it should be entertaining. Provided I'm not under arrest by sundown (which is always a distinct possibility when I venture into the belly of the beast), I hope to post some pics of the event.

so anyway, I should be doing my school-work right now but I need a break. As far as my continuing education is concerned, I have learned that Val-U-Rite vodka and homework do not mix well.

I had a revelation whilst walking The Wonder Poodle this evening: If this whole ObamaCare thingie gets "deemed" as passed on Sunday and Teh Won signs it, it would certainly suck out loud to be invested in the stock market come Monday morning.

Just a thought. I'm not big on predictions but if ObamaCare gets "deemed" and signed, I think a lot of money will get pulled from the market in short order. Like, something approaching one sixth of the current market capitalization. I know, I know: Why can't I have these insights during regular business hours, when you could call your broker and move stuff around. I'm working on my "timing".

Anyhoo, a post titled "King of the Wild Frontier" should contain references to either Thayrone (Supply Side Politics 2.0's Blues Provider of Choice of industrial strength Rhythm & Blues) and / or Davy Crockett (who killed him a bear when he was only three). In this case, I'm going with Davy Crockett.

so anyway, I've been doing a little "housekeeping" here at Supply Side Politics 2.0. Nothing major, just "brightening up" the side-bar a bit.

I've been unavoidably detained since posting last. I started back to school the week of 22FEB10 and it's kicking my ass. It's a long-ish story for another time.

I've had some blogable ideas since we spoke last, but haven't had the time to address them properly. Some of the blogable ideas follow:

Impeach Obama: yes, you can actually purchase a "Impeach Obama" bumper sticker. My question is "Why?" Yes, I understand that the "Impeach Obama" movement has more actual Constitutional standing than the "Impeach Bush" crowd ever had, but putting a "Impeach Obama" bumper sticker on your car is just asking for vandalism. I had my truck vandalized in February of 2000 for having a "Bush 2000" sticker on the rusty old bumper. After that, I kept the "Bush / Cheney" sticker in my glove-box. As the leftist are far more likely to act like petulant children towards those with whom they disagree, why risk it?
Related: I'm thinking on printing up some "Cheney / Palin 2012" stickers just to make the collective heads of the populace of Moscow on the Huron (aka Ann Arbor, Michigan) explode. It's what I do. I'm a "giver"
Riddle me this, Batman: why is it that the same people who voted for (mmm mmm mmm) Barack Hussein Obama will look you directly in the eye and tell you that Sarah Palin isn't "qualified" to be President. Am I the only one having a "WTF?" moment here? I mean, electing Obama has set the bar pretty fcuking low to begin with, based on the "Obama Standard" I'm far more qualified to hold the office than he is.

Shire Network News has been my most favorite podcast for over three years now. SNN's podcast was simply the best way to spend 45-ish minutes every other week. But their normal operating tempo of "once a fortnight" went poof; there's been no podcast since 19DEC09.

Sigh. I really do not like "change". I have also been around these inter-tubes web-thingies long enough to know not to bitch about free ice cream, or the lack thereof.

I hope all of the SNN crew are happy and thriving. I just really miss having them tell me about it every other week. Can I Haz More Please?

so anyway, today marks the 99th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan's birth. doG, I miss him. To honor the occasion, I present the following quotes from our 40th President:

so anyway, via the headlines from Yahoo News, riffing on the Detroit News, comes this item:

FBI shootout with Muslim cleric lasted about 4 seconds

Detroit -- The hail of gunfire that killed a Muslim cleric inside a Dearborn warehouse in October lasted only about four seconds, a person familiar with the investigation said Saturday.

More than 20 FBI agents were at the FBI-controlled warehouse near Michigan Avenue and Oakwood where Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah and his confederates were about to be arrested as part of an FBI sting operation Oct. 28.

The FBI has accused Abdullah, 53, of being the leader of a radical Muslim separatist group involved in fencing stolen goods.

Abdullah fired three shots before four of the FBI agents returned fire, resulting in Abdullah being struck more than a dozen times.

"....more than a dozen" I'm guessing thirteen, maybe fourteen times.

Each of the four agents fired an average of five shots each, the source said. An FBI dog was killed in the shootout.

The fact that a dog was killed in the action harshes my mellow extremely. Otherwise, five shots each from four Special Agents (for a total of twenty) in four seconds with 60%+ of said rounds on target. OutStanding! I can put all six .357 rounds (mostly) in the 9-ring with my Ruger Speed Six in five seconds, but then again, no one is shooting back at me.

Autopsy results are expected to be released Monday, Dearborn police said. The autopsy was completed in December, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, but held until Dearborn police could finish their investigation.

Muslim leaders have questioned how many times Abdullah was shot (more than a dozen, per the Detroit News - ed), whether he suffered dog bites (probably not - ed) and if he was handcuffed after being shot (if he was still alive at the time, yes - ed) Those questions may be cleared up with the release of the autopsy.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (I just knew that those CAIR ashsoles would eventually show up in this story) on Saturday reiterated a previous request for the U.S. Department of Justice to look into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Among the questions CAIR wants answered are whether FBI agents summoned medical help if Abdullah was still alive when agents found him, exactly how many times he was shot and where bullets struck his body.

doG forbid that any of the FBI's poodle-shooter rounds ended up anywhere near Abdullah's pee-pee.....otherwise CAIR would get even more wee-wee'd up:

"We want the civil rights division of the Justice Department to launch an investigation into this," Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR's Michigan office, said Saturday. "It has to be further investigated."

Russia's first stealth fighter

The SORP (Start of Regular Production, a little Stupid Business lingo) for T-50 isn't until 2015, and like I said in the sub-head, they'll certainly build more that 186 of them. No, they'll build a flaming metric ass-load of them for themselves and a second flaming metric ass-load to sell to their client countries.

As for why the number "186" is important:

"The U.S. [Obama - ed] administration decided to quit buying the F-22 Raptor, the world's most expensive fighter jet at more than $140 million apiece, effectively capping its production at the 186 already ordered."

Back in April 2009, Stephen "VodkaPundit" Green had this to say about the effect of the Obama administration's decision to stop buying the F-22:

".....That difference is even more real when you consider that 187 Raptors are to replace 483 F-15C Eagles — a reduction-in-force of over 60%, coming quick on the heels of a nearly 50% RIF throughout the ’90s. Shortly, those 187 planes will be our only manned air supremacy fighters....."

so anyway, Gabriel Malor has a post over at Ace's place on the the Civil Marriage Religious Freedom Act being considered by the California legislature. The part that caught my eye was this:

"The bill also changes California's marriage statutes to refer to "civil marriage" instead of just "marriage" to emphasize that the statutes apply to legally-binding, state-regulated marriages as contrasted with purely religious marriages that have no civil consequences."

Back in early November, in response to a post by Ragin' Dave of Four Right Wing Wackos fame, I posted the following:

"I've often wondered why the "civil union" option was considered just right out amongst the gay marriage proponents. It seems perfectly plausible to me.

Define "marriage". To most people, it conjures up visions of a couple, at the alter, swearing vows to each other before a preacher / priest / what-ever. In short, a union "blessed" by the church.

But let's look at what you have to do to get "married": first, you have to go to your local government and get a "Marriage License", an approval from the civil authorities to get hitched. Second (for most folks) you need to find a member of the clergy to perform (sanctify?) the marriage.

Let me offer a personal example: me and TheMissus™. We chose to be wed in a small private ceremony by a Justice of the Peace, as neither of us are church-going types......By the popular definition, we're not married, but have a civil union: endorsed by the State, but not "blessed" by the church.

So why is the "civil union" option so objectionable to the proponents of "gay marriage"? Hell if I know. Legally, TheMissus™ and I are just as "married" as if we were wed by Cardinal Glick in front of the Buddy Christ statue. Why this kind of "civil union" is not good enough for the "gay marriage" crowd, I'll never know."

I say "lame-ish" because if anything deserved a "flaming skull", it was Jenny "Canadian" Grandholm's "blown away" speech. Did you see any flaming skulls? Me neither.

At least the former head of the Michigan GOP had the decency to seek a restraining order against me. My offer to Saul A. still stands for Ron W.: for six-figures and all the pudding I can...(ahem) use... I can "turbo" the MI-GOP's web content.

Sadly, the only piece in my collection that reflects Browning's brilliance is a Chinese copy of a Soviet design (can you say "Tokarev"?) that the the Soviets ripped off from Browning's original design.

On days like this I really miss Kim du Toit.

so anyway, I've been watching the special election in Massachusetts off and on all day, mostly via Ace and R.S.McCain, with a smattering of Memeorandum.

I had a "here we go" minute this morning when I saw this in one of Ace's comment threads:

As it turns out, it was just some isolated ding-bat, not a concerted movement.

TheOtherMcCain was accentuating the positive this morning:

I was AFK for a couple of hours this afternoon, and when I popped back on to the inter-web net tube thingie (briefly) around 7:30 this evening, I was pleasantly surprised (well, actually not surprised) to see that (now) Senator-Elect Scott Brown, R-MA was comfortably ahead, well beyond the margin of error. When I sat back down for the blogging hour at 9-ish PM, it was a done deal.

I've been reading the blogosphere's reactions to the Senator-Elect Scott Brown, R-MA situation for the past two hours, and one of the little voices in my head keeps saying "Why not here? Why not in Michigan?"

"Extraordinary year" makes The President "tired"

so anyway, I was half way through my first cup of coffee this morning when I tripped over this little gem:

CAPITAL CULTURE: Big first year leaves Obama tired

I siht you not. It's from some outfit called "AP", whoever that is. I've never heard of them. A few snippets of this vapid excuse of reporting:

".....President Barack Obama made a not altogether surprising admission. He was tired.
Who could blame him? The president was on his ninth foreign trip to his 21st country; (after trips to all 57 states during the campaign - ed.) he added a 10th trip the following week. The year had been bookended by the two most intense periods of his young presidency — the early decisions to bail out the nation's banks and automobile industry (personal note: his "bail-out" of the auto industry has left me unemployed for over seven months - ed.), steps the president deemed unpopular but necessary, and his December orders to deploy 30,000 additional U.S. troops to fight the war ("of necessity, not a war of choice" per The President's own words) in Afghanistan....."

Difficult decisions, to be sure. If he had only read the job description for the position to which he applied, he should have knowd.

"Throw in an unemployment rate in the double-digits, a health care bill still stuck on Capitol Hill, and last-minute negotiations on a global climate change agreement....."

By "last-minute negotiations on a global climate change agreement" the writer must mean "having all the data proven to be falsified and the purveyors of the falsified data loosing their jobs and facing criminal charges". It's a subtle point.

".....the president is tired, and looking forward to recharging during his year-end family vacation in Hawaii.
Not that the commander in chief really thinks he can escape his duties, even on an island. Amid golf, tennis, gym workouts and dinner, Obama has been called on to monitor the airliner attack in Detroit last Friday ("Chief? I know you hung the 'Do Not Disturb' sign on the door-knob, but this is kinda important, and it's, like, you know, your JOB." - ed.) and what appeared to be another attack on Sunday — that incident turned out to be a false alarm. On Monday, Obama worked out in the morning and played tennis before making his first public remarks on airline security, then hit the golf course (again - ed.)."

Read the whole thing, it goes on for another eleven similarly "self-fisking" paragraphs.

A lot of people are "tired". Most people do not have recreational opportunities on the scale that The President enjoys. Sound to me like "Barry from DC" needs to man up.

so anyway, via The Other McCain, I saw that the Administration's official position on the attempted act of terrorism on Flight 253 was that is was "just a lone nut with explosive underpants". R.S.McCain quotes The Wall Street Journal:

The U.S. has "no indication" that an attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines flight was part of a larger plot by a terrorist group, a top Obama administration official said.
"Right now we have no indication that it is part of anything larger, but obviously the investigation continues," Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on CNN's "State of the Union" program on Sunday.

Apparently, Al-Qaida didn't get the memo, as their branch office in Yemen had an announcement of their own:

CAIRO – Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for the attempted attack on a U.S. airliner on Christmas day, saying it was retaliation for a U.S. operation against the group in Yemen.

In a statement posted on the Internet, the group said 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab coordinated with members of the group.....
....The group said the would-be bomber used explosives manufactured by al-Qaida members.

Although the exact translation of their announcement is still in process, the post script of Al-Qaida's announcement is thought to read: "Yo! Napolitano? Enjoying very much are you the taste of our ass?" I'll update once the translation is complete.

Kudos to the translators, your first draft is solid "B+" material.

so anyway, it's not everyday that you find the brighter lights of the right side of the blogosphere praising one of the left's leading voices. But, it's true!

First, Dennis the Peasant of Dennis the Peasant fame named Jane Hamsher of firedoglake the "Best Political Blogger of 2009". Color me stunned, but Dennis has his reasons:

OK, I'm sure this one's got you scratching your head. Jane's a true-blue progressive and I'm the sort of conservative who'd just as soon serve polar bear in a mushroom sauce as cut back on my carbon footprint. But hear me out on this one. Jane isn't winning because I agree with her politics, she's winning because she - and she alone - has been utterly fearless in documenting (and criticizing) Bambi Obama's complete sell-out of progressives over health care, er, insurance reform.

Where just about every other Democrat/liberal/progressive blogger on the planet is now attempting to polish the turd that is Obama's health care, er, insurance reform, Jane Hamsher has stuck to her principles rather than equivocate for the sake of The One's political legacy.

You have to wonder what Bambi could have done had he been born with a pair the size of Jane's.

Who knows, maybe they've gotten over the whole BDS thingie and we can resume a healthy debate.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein told CNSNews.com that using tax dollars from pro-life Americans to pay for insurance plans that cover abortion is morally correct.

Really? There was a time when we debated over whether abortion was right or wrong, now the debate is over who should pay for it.

So, the science is settled, is it? Perhaps the good Senator could put me some knowledge as to exactly when life begins, 'cause the last time I checked, no one has figured that out.

Sen.Feinstein continues:

"Is it morally correct? Yes, I believe it is. Abortion is legal, and there (are) certain very tragic circumstances that a woman finds herself in. Married, with an unborn baby that’s unable to survive outside of the womb, her doctor tells her it’s a threat to her health. I think she ought to have a policy available to her."

CNSNews.com asked: "So it’s morally right for pro-life taxpayers to have to help pay for plans that cover abortion?"

Feinstein responded: "Please. We pay for a lot of things that we may or may not agree with, and taxpayers pay for it, for those things, as well."

I could go on for days about the things we pay for but do not agree with (the Department of Education and the NEA spring to mind), but I would not frame my arguments against on "moral" grounds. I prefer to debate such issues on a Constitutional basis. Not that Sen.Feinstein has any concerns about the Constitution.....

so anyway, it looks like former Vice President Al "An Inconsistent Truth" Gore, Jr. has cancelled his appearance at Chicken Little's "The Sky is Falling" conference in Denmark.

"We have had a clear-cut agreement, and it is unusual with great disappointment that we have to announce that Al Gore cancels. We had a huge expectation for the event. . . . We do not yet know the detailed reasons for the cancellation," said Lisbeth Knudsen, CEO of Berlingske Media, in a statement posted by the company.

Emphasis mine, of course. Could it be that every time algore gives a speech, anywhere, the locality suffers their coldest day ever? We know that algore has special powers: he can tell you what the climate will be fifty years from now, but don't ask him if its going to snow next Tuesday. He's a visionary, not a mere weatherman.

It's beyond the scope as of this writing, but keep checking the weather forecast for Copenhagen. Time will tell....

so anyway, as far as I know, Gabriel Malor kicked off the meme over at Ace of Spades early this afternoon, with his "Pumpkin Cheesecake Dip". Do go read, it sounds delicious.

In keeping with the contractual obligation, I offer the following recipes for your Thanksgiving enjoyment:

Crock Pot Pumpkin Pie Pudding

SERVES 4 -6

1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin
1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup gluten free flour mix
2 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons butter or margarine (melted)
2 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
2 teaspoons vanilla

Whipped Cream

In a large bowl mix together the first eight ingredients.
Transfer to small crock pot coated with Pam.
Cover and cook on low 6-7 hours.
Serve in bowls with whip cream, if desired.

Or this:

Apple Crisp

Ingredients
6 apples, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup apple juice 0r 1/4 cup orange juice/1/4 cup apple juice
1 cup EnjoyLife cinnamon granola
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp canola oil
3 tbsp applesauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
Directions
1. Peel and slice apples. Place into 8x8 baking dish or pie plate. Pour juice/s over the apples.
2. In mixing bowl, combine granola, cinnamon, vanilla, canola oil, applesauce and brown sugar. Will form a thick granola batter.
3. Spread topping/batter over sliced apples.
4. Bake at 350 for 35 minutes.
5. Let cool and drain excess juices if necessary.
This is a good rendition of a butterless apple crisp. Butter is a key to the a "crisp recipe", but this tasted fine without it!

Since tuna isn't a Thanksgiving staple, I offer this one up as a freebie:

Tuna casserole

1 12 oz. box of Lundberg penne rice pasta
1 big can of bumble bee tuna
vegan mayonnaise
1 can organic valley cream of mushroom soup
1 can organic valley cream of celery soup
1 jar pimentos
garlic pieces (hard)
celery
1 8 oz. package of Kraft shredded cheese
almonds, slivered
almond crackers, crushed

cook pasta, mix with tuna, celery, mayo, garlic powder, seasoned salt, pepper, add pimentos and garlic pieces

melt cheese into two cans of soup then add in tuna/pasta mixture

top with paprika

cook on 400 about 25 mins then add the slivered almonds and/or crushed almond crackers for about 8 minutes..

The astute reader will recognize that the all recipes offered are gluten free (even Gabe's recipe), plan your menu accordingly.

Sure, I'm cherry-picking LocoPunk's points, but not so much. I agree with LocoPunk's conclusion, but, with as much as I admire Darth Cheney, I still think that a Thompson / Palin ticket in 2012 would stomp the opposition into a bloody puddle.

another grueling week of unemployment grinds to a halt

so anyway, since I had to run some errands today I thought I'd take advantage of being out of the house and swing by Taco Bell for a couple of their most excellent Cheesy Double Beef Burritos.

When the girl handed me the bag, she said "Here you go. See you tomorrow". To which I asked "What?" She replied: "Well, your in here almost every day with the exact same order....."

I'm only doing this because Rachel Lucas is currently unable to support her beloved Taco Bell. Someone has to keep the chain alive until her return (I'm a "giver"; it's all about adding value to the lives of others). And the fact that the Cheesy Double Beef Burrito kicks some serious ass. It's the Chuck Norris of the "Value Menu" meme.

Here's my question: Is having the local Taco Bell expect me to show up and order the same thing every day a bad sign?

so anyway, I completely agree with Falahime over at Dan Collin's Piece of Work in Progress:

Shooting ranges in office buildings......I think it would increase employee productivity and morale. You have a bad evaluation–take your break and go fire off a few magazines. Exhausted and frustrated from with a completely moronic client? Time for a time-out in the shooting range!

He says so, facetiously (mostly), but he's right. Popping some caps can be an incredible stress reliever. I've said so myself:

I guess I'd forgotten the endorphin (sp? or what? I'm not an endocrinologist nor do I play one on TV) "high" you get after a range session, but I'm digging it deep. I've spent the past hour enhancing that feeling with copious quantities of Hoppes #9 Nitro Solvent as I clean the hardware.

Read Falahime's whole (short) post and before you go off on your "Guns are bad, M'Kay?" spiel please remember: An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.
